Mission Trip: JAARS

April 10-16

Our mission trip this year was to help the ministry of JAARS by doing repair/maintenance work at their facility in Waxhaw, NC.  If you’re unfamiliar with JAARS, it is a ministry that “exists to make Bible translation and language development possible, especially in the most remote and difficult places on earth… by enabling locally-appropriate and sustainable solutions in transportation, technology, media, and training.”

So for the week of April 10-16, we rolled up our sleeves and went to work.  Several of us (Deb Burns, Joann Cooper, Sandy Moffet, Bruce and Lisa Tully, and Margaret Sensenig) painted privacy fences built around dumpster pads, gas tanks, and a storage shed. Bev Berwin went to housekeeping every day and sewed, repairing sheets and doing quilting. George Cooper and Paul Herr spent the week in the wood shop cutting and staining pieces to repair several park benches. On one rainy day we washed several walls of windows.

In addition to the joy of serving through our work, we also enjoyed meeting new people.  We had lunch every day with many different missionaries who are retired, on furlough, or just getting ready to go serve. Through conversations with them, we learned more about how God had used them or was using them in various places around the world.   Each person that we met thanked us for coming to serve at JAARS and told us to thank our church family for their support in sending us to North Carolina.

We felt that we were doing such a small, unimportant task, yet they made us feel and understand that we can’t all fill the same position. We each fill a different roll, and all of us working together help those serving with Wycliffe and SIL (Summer Institute of Linguistics) to get the Bible to those who have never heard it!

We are thankful that our small part allows us to be partners together in ministry “for we are God’s fellow workers” (I Corinthians 3:9).
